About

John Giduck is a second generation Ukrainian-American who has traveled, worked and studied extensively in Russia and the former Soviet Union for almost twenty years. His early work in the Soviet Union involved serving as a delegate with the American Bar Association at the First U.S.-Soviet Bi-Lateral Conference on Economic and Legal Development in Moscow.

John Giduck has a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Logistics from Penn State and a law degree from the University of Denver. He also earned a Master of Social Sciences degree, specializing in Russian studies, from the University of Colorado, which included completion of the Russian Culture and Language Program at the Smolniy Institute of St. Petersburg State University in Russia. His thesis dealt with the history of Russian Organized Crime, current criminal enterprises and their impact on U.S. businesses operating there. An instructor at several colleges for 5 years, he developed and taught the first college accredited course on Russian Organized Crime in the Criminal Justice Department of Metropolitan State University in Denver, and led a group of U.S. criminal justice students and law enforcement professionals on a month long program on Russian law enforcement and intelligence in Moscow, St. Petersburg and Tallinn, Estonia, which included lectures in and a tour of the KGB’s Lubyanka headquarters.

In 2011 he received his Ph.D. in Middle East Studies from Kings College in London. His dissertation was on the evolution of jihadist terrorist mass-hostage siege tactics throughout the world.

In the past he was general counsel to a U.S.-Russian Trading Company, a panel expert on Russia and Russian Organized Crime at several World Affairs Conferences, and lectured and consulted on Russian Organized Crime, and Terrorism and Global Organized Crime, to many law enforcement associations and agencies around the United States, including the F.B.I. National Academy Program, DEA, and Colorado Bureau of Investigation, as well as private security organizations. He has also trained U.S. state and federal law enforcement officers and agents, including DEA, FBI, US Marshal’s Service, SWAT teams and countless police departments on various aspects of jihadist terrorism.

He has worked in more than twenty countries, including the Soviet Union, Russia, Ukraine, the Chechen War Theater, southern Sudan, southern Thailand, Kosovo, Afghanistan, Mumbai, India, and the Republic of Georgia during the Russian invasion and occupation of 2008. He holds the highest Homeland Security certification with the American Board for Certification in Homeland Security, a division of the American College of Forensic Examiners, and was a recipient of that group’s Outstanding Achievement Award, and its former Colorado state Coordinator for Emergency Preparation and Response Teams, and member of its Executive Advisory Board, as well as an executive board member of the former Police Marksman Magazine.

John Giduck is a lifetime honorary member of the Special Operations Association, and was awarded that organization’s Special Service Award in 2003. He is also a member of the Russian Special Forces Brotherhood of the Red Beret Association, is a lifetime executive member of the British Professional Bodyguard Association, and a graduate of the first class of the Denver FBI Citizen’s Academy. He is a current member of the Advisory Board of the College of Disaster Medicine and Management of Philadelphia University.

In addition to other published materials and articles on terrorism, Russian organized crime and close quarters tactics, John Giduck is a well-respected author and finished his book, Terror at Beslan: A Russian Tragedy With Lessons for America’s Schools, in 2005. His second book, co-authored with Green Beret Sergeant Major John Anderson, entitled The Green Beret In You: Living With Total Commitment To Family, Career, Sports and Life, was published in 2007. In early 2011 he co-authored Shooter Down! The Dramatic Untold Story of the Police Response to the Virginia Tech Massacre, along with Police Commissioner Joseph M. Bail, Jr. In December 2011 he released his latest book, When Terror Returns: The History and Future of Terrorist Mass-Hostage Sieges. John is currently working on his next book on the terror attacks in Mumbai, India in November 2008.

John is a 32nd degree Freemason and member of the ancient order of the Knights Templar. He is a black belt holder, is a multiple inductee into two international martial arts halls of fame, and trained with Russia’s elite special forces units annually for more than 10 years during which he became a certified instructor in Russian special forces hand-to-hand combat. In 1980 he was co-captain of Penn State’s National Collegiate Weightlifting Championship Team, and in 1984 won the U.S. Open Weightlifting Championships in addition to receiving the Outstanding Lifter Award. Over the years he won or placed in numerous other state, regional and national weightlifting championships.

John Giduck devotes his professional time to the Archangel Group, Ltd., providing anti-terrorism consulting and training to U.S. law enforcement, government and military, part of which included, for several years, John having served as a civilian contract instructor in hand-to-hand combat and firearms to the 10th Special Forces Group through the REACT® program he and Special Forces Sergeant Major (ret.) John A. Anderson created, as well as providing training to such units as the Delta Force. As part of his work with Archangel, John Giduck has also helped create and instruct in such programs as scuba, tactical diving, terrorist-hostage negotiations, terrorism and global organized crime, Russian organized crime, terrorist mass-hostage siege, Virginia Tech, Mumbai and Beslan terror attack courses. In January 2012 he was hired to assist in creating the international intelligence section of the Narcotics & Intelligence Unit of the City of Chester (PA) Police Department and also serves as a training coordinator.

Correction: John Giduck was incorrectly identified as a former  Special Forces soldier in an earlier version of the conference program.  At the beginning of his presentation, he voluntarily clarified that he  had not served in the military. The error is regretted and is herewith  corrected.
This panel will discuss changes in intelligence processes under the theme “The Three Dimensions of Intelligence in the 21st Century: Strategic, Tactical and Non-State.” Each of the speakers will discuss a particular type of intelligence activity, product and organization – the aim being to give ISF attendees an all around view of how intelligence work is being conducted and is likely to change in coming years. Dr Michael Goodman, the official historian of the UK Joint Intelligence Committee, will speak on strategic intelligence and post-Cold War threats. Mr Brian M Jenkins, Senior Advisor at the RAND Corporation, will speak on police intelligence and counter-terrorism. Dr John Giduck will speak on non-state intelligence, focusing specifically on terrorist groups. Terror at Beslan

(Description from Amazon)
The complete and accurate story of the Beslan School Siege that occurred in Russia on September 1, 2004. This book tells the untold story about the victims, the soldiers who were there and the history of the events leading up to the tragic incident. But more than just the story, this book highlights the lessons America's school system can learn from the tragedy to protect itself from terrorism.

“John Giduck is one our nation’s leading experts on Terrorism. Don’t just read this book, study and apply it.”
Lt. Col. Dave GrossmanAuthor On Combat, On Killing and Stop Teaching our Kids how to Kill

“John Giduck presents a realistic “play by play” of the events that transpired those fateful days in September. This should be required reading for law enforcement and school officials alike.”
Connie Bond, editor
The Police Marksman Magazine

Reviews from Amazon Readers where this book has over 47, 5 star ratings from readers:

Mr. Giduck with his Archangel team was on site in Beslan immediately following the firefight, researching step-by-step the deadly chronology of events. Archangel's professionals analysed the strategies and mistakes of the Russian Alpha and Vympel forces who responded to the desperate situation. But not only to get an accurate account (which the Russian government was obstructing): The author believes it is only a matter of time until terrorists commit a similar attack on an American school.

This should be a wakeup call to all parents, teachers and school administrators; it is not if it will happen here but when.

The Green Beret in You
Co-Author with Special Forces Sergeant Major John A. Anderson (Ret.)

(From Amazon)
The Green Beret in You is look at the way Green Berets live there lives through honor, integrity, and discipline. Our organization feels that American men, and men all over the world, could benefit from reading this book. The majority of American men have lost their warriorship and it is time they are reminded of the duties and responsibilities that come with being a man. The modern man has become characterized by doing the easy thing and not the right thing. This problem has become a plague on American society and our enemies all over the world know this. This book examines the mentality of men in our special operations units and the benefits of living your life as they do. This same min

d set is not totally absent in our society but it is becoming more and more rare. Warriors are still among us and these are the people that the average citizen runs to in a time of crisis.

“The essential guide to manhood. If John Wayne had left a how-to-manual on being a real man, this would be it.”
Brad ThorAuthor The Last Patriot, The First Commandment, Foreign Influence and The Athena Project

“Sergeant Major John Anderson and John Giduck have unraveled the mystery and clearly explain the path to finding the Green Beret inside yourself.”
Command Sergeant Major Mel WickFounding Cadre Member of the Delta Force

Reviews from Amazon Readers:

Like I said, I read a lot of books, and there are some that I do go back to for research when I'm writing, but there are very few that I will read cover to cover multiple times. This

book has just earned a spot on that short list. This is a book I will read again to continuously remind myself of how I should be living and to help me teach others to live with the Warrior's Edge.
By Alain B. Burrese "Author, Speaker, Mediator, ...

Once I got this book, I had trouble putting it down. I have read most of it at least twice and some parts three times. I have also purchased additional copies and have given them as gifts. I believe that there are life-lessons for all of us, especially those in the military and in public service careers. John Giduck and John Anderson are two men that have been there, done that and their life experiences can teach something to all of us.

John Giduck - Archangel Group REACT® Course for Special Operations

John Giduck and Archangel Group are all fully committed to providing "Ability over Technology" – what that means is the best, most effective, innovative and combat proven training available today for those preparing for terror attack.

The REACT® – Rapid Engage and Close-quarters Tactics is a fully integrated close-quarters hand-to-hand combat/firearms course that was originally specifically developed for military special operations, but has since been taught to numerous SWAT teams throughout the U.S.

All of the hi-tech gear, training toys and weapons are seldom necessary to prevail in battle, and they are never a substitute for good training and committed operators. During REACT® training participants will not enjoy the luxury of viewing room and building clearing through 3-D virtual reality projectors, they will race through real buildings; they will run up and down the stairs until they get it right. They will roll in the dirt, not walk through palatial, multi-plex shooting simulators.

Participants do not need to travel to anyone's state of the art facility for expensive training. There is no training we do that we cannot do anywhere. John and Archangel believe that if you are expected to operate anywhere, you have to be able to train anywhere.

Course instruction is based on combat proven close-quarters handgun techniques, together with the unarmed combat, weapons disarming, and weapon retention techniques of the Russian Special Forces (Spetsnaz).

Both military and law enforcement have benefitted from this practical training:

Our Tac team was involved in a deadly force shooting on April 1st. You would be glad to know that even though this idiot shot at us twice with a 30/30 rifle, no members of the team were hurt. This is the first time in the history of the team that we were fired upon. That it was a 30/30 rifle was even more nerve racking for the team members. The Team were totally professional and calm during this crazy situation. The suspect ate a lot of gas and barricaded himself in his tiny apartment. Two team members, one who attended your REACT® training, fired after the suspect pushed his rifle through the ceiling. They fired in the direction of the barrel and he was hit 4 times (3 .223, 1 40 cal pistol). Nobody panicked they did what they were taught and fired. I was in the room with them holding a fireman pole trying to open a closet door. After they fired I backed them out of the room and we held on the door way. Another team member was in our Peace Keeper APC and he fired at the suspect when he came out from the ceiling. He also attended your REACT® course. He basically covered us as we backed out. The shooters hit the suspect in his ass and the fatal wound was caused by a gunshot wound to the femoral artery. We believe he defeated the gas by climbing into the attic, which he used to get clean air. His apartment was so barricaded, that one of the guys said that it reminded him of how you described the school in Beslan from your book.

Six out of the 12 officers who attend your REACT® class in York have been shot at (two different incidents), three used deadly force, NO OFFICERS WERE HURT. Two dead aggressive bad guys. This last incident we felt like we were being hunted. I thought you might be interested in that statistic. I realized this about 4 hours after the incident. Our team have really pushed Point Shooting, and I know there are multiple officers here in York that are alive because of following your training and philosophies (80% have read Terror at Beslan).

Please use this as a thanks and a strong endorsement that your training methods work, the stats above speak for themselves.

Lt Ron Camacho and the members of the York County Quick Response Team.

John Giduck - Book Review of When Terror Returns by Richard J. Hughbank

In the latest issue of Homeland Security Magazine, When Terror Returns by Dr John Giduck, is reviewed by Major Richard Hughbanks, US Army (ret).

A scan of the printed magazine review is posted at the end of this article. As an exclusive we have the full and unedited review for our readers.

Book Review

WHEN TERROR RETURNSThe History and Future of Terrorist Mass-Hostage Sieges

By: Richard J. Hughbank

This book will prove an invaluable tool in my future teachings as a professor of homeland security studies.

John Giduck has done it once again! He has researched and written another book on the subject of terrorism that can only be described as dynamic and cutting-edge.

In his fourth book, “When Terror Returns”, John probes the terrorist mindset in a two-pronged approach - informational and educational - that has been carefully articulated for all audiences. He has meticulously identified and outlined four types of terrorist attacks at the strategic level: Decimation Assaults; Mass-Hostage Sieges; Hybrid or Synergistic Attacks; and Symphonic Attacks, which forces his readers to rethink current hostage-taking situations. Additionally, John has set the stage for future understanding of terrorist mass-hostage tactics via historical case studies that prove extremely relevant in the overall development of a terrorist and, more importantly, how we might find ways to mitigate and respond to these types of attacks.

The detailed analysis of five mass-hostage sieges in Russia: (1) Budyonovsk, (2) Kizlyar, (3) Pervomaiskoye, (4) The Nord-Ost Theater Siege in Moscow, and (5) The Beslan School decidedly demonstrate a terrorist’s capabilities to conduct such operations with precision and deadly results. Additionally, John meticulously addresses the school siege in Ma’a lot, Israel, those in the Netherlands, and the Japanese Ambassador’s residence siege in Lima, Peru. Each case study is carefully analyzed to present the ongoing evolution of terrorist tactics in mass-hostage sieges.

After establishing the terrorist’s tactics, John has methodically approached and designed a predictive modeling theory for future attacks. His “Six-Phase Mass-Hostage Siege Model” provides critical insight into tactics and strategies leading his readers, and rightfully so, to “believe that a Beslan-style attack on a U.S. school is virtually inevitable in the foreseeable future.”

This book will prove an invaluable tool in my future teachings as a professor of homeland security studies.

When Terror Returns
John Giduck – PhD on Mass-Hostage Siege Terror Attacks

John Giduck has earned a PhD from Kings College in London. A lifelong scholar, John has always looked for ways to further his knowledge and learning.

In addition to John Giduck's previous degrees, which include a bachelor’s degree, a law degree and a master’s degree that specialized in Russian studies, including study at St. Petersburg State University in Russia, John applied for acceptance into the doctoral program with the Department of Middle East Studies at Kings College in London, one of the world's most prestigeous schools – dedicated to the advance of knowledge and learning in the service of society. John's ongoing efforts to develop a solid foundation in the factors driving jihadist terrorism throughout the globe today for his work with Archangel Group was a key factor in his decision to apply for this rigorous program.

John Giduck was accepted into the program in early 2008 for the fall class and immediately began research into his dissertation topic (in the British system this is called a thesis). The dissertation topic was the categorization of terrorist strategic-level attack methodologies, and particularly the evolution of their mass-hostage siege tactics. It should be noted that John's prior research into the school siege in Beslan, Russia in September 2004 and the subsequent bookTerror at Beslan, was certainly a catalyst for this interest.

The dissertation takes on more significance in the overall doctoral scheme in Britain than in the U.S., and with those greater demands, John Giduck was forced to work exhaustively to produce an acceptable paper that made a unique contribution to the knowledge of this area. In addition to that, he also had to offer information and analysis that was not previously available to those governments and forces who would respond to these attacks in the future.

The research extended far beyond the existing reports or publications of other pundits. John utilized an extensive network of contacts with foreign military commanders and government officials, including top Al Qaeda experts, to develop the most complete and in-depth information possible. In further effort, he also traveled to the sites of the worst terror attacks to conduct field research.

This field research allowed John to examine the attacks from the perspectives of the terrorists in their selection and tactics, the victims and the responding forces. The field research was conducted in places such as Mumbai, India where he studied the targets of the November 2008 attacks with members of the Indian special forces assault teams and command, police officers and others. It also included the Netiv Meir School in Ma’a lot-Tarshiha, Israel which was taken on May 15, 1974. John's earlier efforts to study the Beslan attack and his unprecedented access to Russian spetsnaz (special forces) commanders provided information that had never before been made public.

The resulting paper – Mass-Hostage Siege Terror Attacks: A Comparative Case Study and Predictive Analysis from Israel, Russia and India, was submitted by John as the final requirement to earn his degree in early 2010. His defense was scheduled in November of that year, and his diploma was issued in 2011.

Due to a 100,000 word limit on the dissertation for acceptance by Kings College, John was forced to cull out two-thirds of the original text. The original manuscript – with the exception of a detailed section on the Mumbai attacks – became the foundation of his most recent book, When Terror Returns: The History and Future of Terrorist Mass-Hostage Sieges.

That book, Dr Giduck's fourth, was released in December 2011.

John Giduck - Training in Russia

John Giduck and associates of Archangel Group have completed numerous training trips to Russia. By the mid-1990s John Giduck had been working in Russia and had also begun doing work on his master’s degree in St Petersberg. As a former wrestler and wrestling coach he had always had an interest in learning Russian Sambo, a type of Russian ju jitsu with military hand-to-hand combat applications. John Giduck's training in this system ultimately led to the study of two other Russian martial arts known as Rukopashnii Boi and Systema.

In 1999 John had been authorized to bring the first small group of Americans over to train, who underwent an arduous program, which included 18 hour days, much of it in hand-to-hand combat. Several other programs expanded the skills being taught and required the groups to live on spetsnaz compounds. Through these programs Americans from both law enforcement and the military were provided great exposure to the assets, weapons, techniques and skills of their former Cold War adversary.

As the majority of the instructors were military, with many being spetsnaz soldiers, over time John Giduck was offered the opportunity to train in other skills such as firearms, BTR and BMP (wheeled and tracked armored personnel carriers), wilderness survival, and small unit tactics.

The following photo galleries show photos taken from those training trips. For more photos of John Giduck and Archangel Group associates training in Russia please visit the Gallery.

John Giduck - Co-author of The Green Beret in You

John Giduck is the co-author of the book The Green Beret in You: Living with Total Commitment to Family, Career, Sports and Life.

Co-authored with US Special Forces Sergeant Major (ret.) John "Andy" Anderson, The Green Beret in You has been widely applauded for helping provide a handbook for men young and old to live with decency and honor. These are timeless concepts and the book serves as a timely reminder that our society loses them at our peril.

From Amazon:

The Green Beret in You is look at the way Green Berets live there lives through honor, integrity, and discipline. Our organization feels that American men, and men all over the world, could benefit from reading this book. The majority of American men have lost their warriorship and it is time they are reminded of the duties and responsibilities that come with being a man. The modern man has become characterized by doing the easy thing and not the right thing. This problem has become a plague on American society and our enemies all over the world know this. This book examines the mentality of men in our special operations units and the benefits of living your life as they do. This same mind set is not totally absent in our society but it is becoming more and more rare. Warriors are still among us and these are the people that the average citizen runs to in a time of crisis.

In support of the book:

This book has just earned a spot on that short list.

By dugfoot

John Giduck and Archangel Group in Sudan

In 2003 the Archangel Group began to look at getting involved with the conflict in southern Sudan, specifically the program that had been developed by Usama bin Laden in conjunction with the Al-Bashir government during his years there.

In the north of Sudan, where the capital Khartoum is located, the predominant population is Arab Muslims. With the combined forces of the army and the National Islamic Front – which bin Laden helped create, they would sweep into the south and attack the villages populated by black Africans, mainly Christians.

Bombs would be dropped from Russian made aircraft, the men macheted or shot, and the women taken and forced to make a two week march back north. Along the way they would be beaten, tortured and gang raped. Once in Khartoum they were auctioned off as sex and labor slaves.

One of the few groups trying to help these women and villages was Christian Solidarity International. A team from Archangel Group made two trips into rebel controlled southern Sudan in early 2003 to assist in the redemption of slaves, and also to fund and host a peace conference between the two groups. These trips were made with officials from CSI as well as medical doctors providing charity treatment.

Shortly after the second trip, a peace agreement was signed between the two sides which effectively stopped the practice of taking women into slavery. However, unfortunately despite the good work by our and other groups, conflicts in Sudan have continued.

Photos from the 2003 mission are shown in the galleries below.
