January 1962, Esquire, Nine Places in the World to Hide.

An article in 'Esquire' magazine in January '62 entitled Nine Places in the World to Hide,

The article suggested that in the event of all out nuclear war the following areas would still be inhabitable:

Eureka, CA;
Cork, Ireland; and
Guadalajara, Mexico in the northern hemisphere.
The rest were south of the equator:
the central valley of Chile;
Mendoza, Argentina;
Melbourne, Australia;
Christchurch, New Zealand;
Tananarive, Madagascar; and
Belo Horizonte, Brazil.

According to Google Maps data distance between Eureka, CA and Fort Bragg, CA 133 Miles / 214 Km this take 2 hours 26 minutes.

The Cork, Ireland is such a joke! Why not Balsa-wood Indiana. And Eureka Cal. is too close to military bases and fault lines (Actually, Jim Jones never made it to Eureka, only 40 miles nearby.)
