June 27, 1986, Chicago Sun-Times, Photog Honored, by Marvin Weinstein,

PHOTOG HONORED: Frank Johnston of the Washington Post was named Photographer of the Year for the third time by the White House News Photographers' Association for his series on the return to Vietnam 10 years after the war's end. Johnston also won in 1978 with a series on the drought in the Southwest and in 1979 with photos of the tragic deaths in Jonestown, Guyana.

Among his interesting recollections in a Washington Post interview was this tale of Texas in 1963 when he was working for United Press International:

"Like so many others, I was in a state of shock after the assassination of President Kennedy. But I didn't seem to have the time to stay shocked. Too much happened too quickly.

"I remember the day I was supposed to testify at the Jack Ruby trial. Things were running behind, and there was no room left to sprawl in the witness room. I walked back past the courtroom, down a corridor, and almost collided with a guy holding a woman by the throat and a huge pistol at her head. It was my first hostage situation. I was just about to start shooting pictures when I was shoved from behind by an AP (Associated Press) photographer and into another room.

"I ducked out of a window, went down the fire escape carrying a Nikon with a 200. The gunman went through the court building and out on the street, just as I came off the fire escape. He kept moving, dragging the hostage, gun to her head, with him. I followed him through the 200, and as he passed me, I saw a detective stalking him from on top of a line of cars. When the detective jumped him, I had a good set of pictures - just like on TV."

He served in Vietnam for 13 months and had this to say:

"Let me tell you about a recent discussion with some high-ranking military. It's a kind of a conversation I've had before and it really makes me angry.

"These military people spoke long and loud about the media and coverage of Vietnam. They spoke of inaccuracies and showmanship, and seemed to single out photographers for being particularly inaccurate. I resent this. Completely and totally. I challenged them, as I do anyone, to show me a forged picture from Vietnam; to show me an inaccurate picture from Vietnam; to show me any picture that in any way hurt our war effort or to show how any picture, even out of context, was less than honest.

"The roll call of photographers killed in action in Vietnam is long and honorable. Considerably more honorable than their misguided critics. Pictures still do not lie.

"In fact, there are those of us who feel that a memorial to those dead photographers would now be in order. Not just our own, but those of all countries."

March 27, 1997, The Cincinnati Post, Jones Preached in Elmwood Place, Byline: Post staff report

One of the largest-ever cult mass suicides involved the deaths of 913 members of the Jim Jones cult in Jonestown, Guyana, on Nov. 18, 1978.

Jones, a self-proclaimed "faith healer" who grew up in nearby Richmond, Ind., and performed some of his early "healings" in Cincinnati, started his cult in Indianapolis as a young man in his 20s, then set up the People's Temple in California.

In the 1970's he founded a commune in the Guyanan jungle near Georgetown. Jones ordered his followers to commit suicide after observers were killed after visiting the compound.

Jones, who called himself alternately the ''Prophet of God,'' and ''Father,'' preached a mixture of old-time faith healing, racial integration and Marxism. A native of Lynn, Ind., Jones grew up in Richmond, attended Richmond High School, and met his wife, then a nurse, at Richmond's Reid Memorial Hospital.

He first called himself a Unitarian, then professed other religions. In his 20s, he frequently visited a church in Elmwood Place where he ''healed'' followers at packed meetings. He is buried in Richmond.

March 27, 1997, Rocky Mountain News - Associated Press, Jonestown Took Suicides To a New Level
It was one of the world's most bizarre disasters, and it took modern suicides to a new level of horror.

More than 900 followers of cult leader Jim Jones were ordered by Jones to drink cyanide-laced grape punch. Most of them complied, although some were shot, injected with poison or forced to drink the deadly beverage. Sounds of the carnage that occurred on Nov. 18, 1978, in Jonestown, Guyana, could be heard on a tape recording left behind.

Jones had moved the headquarters of his Peoples Temple to San Francisco in the early 1970s. There, he established a free health clinic and a drug rehabilitation program, eventually becoming chairman of the San Francisco Housing Authority in 1976.

But allegations of wrongdoing mounted and Jones moved the settlement to Guyana, the only English-speaking country in South America.

Hundreds of followers moved with him, eager to live the dream of an agricultural commune.

They built cottages, workshops and dormitories in tidy rows, grew fruit and vegetables and raised chickens and pigs over 300 acres.

Then a congressman from San Francisco spent one day at the jungle pavilion investigating allegation of abuse. As Rep. Leo Ryan was preparing to return to the United States with 18 temple members who had wanted to leave, he was ambushed on the airstrip. Ryan, three newsmen and a Temple defector were killed.

Hours later, Jones urged 912 of his followers to drink the grape punch. Children died first; babies were killed by poison squirted into their mouths. Then the adults. Most were poisoned, some forcibly. Some were shot by security guards. Jones was found with a bullet wound in his head.
