What was the purpose for constructing this flawed and undocumentable "document?" Four years ago I addressed this question, after I discovered the History Commons was utilizing the information it contained as the basis for its comprehensive 9/11 Timeline.
I was familiar with a far more extensive breaking-news archive maintained online by an Irish company, Thomas Crosbie Media, which by comparison with the television newscasts from that first morning, I knew contained verbatim quotes attributed on-air to the Associated Press. Internal evidence that the Crosbie material represents the work of the AP comes from a bulletin, timed to the very second in Greenwich Mean Time, wherein AP radio reporter Dave Winslow is the first named eyewitness to substantiate a commercial jetliner had struck the Pentagon building:
Large airliner crashes into the Pentagon
11/09/2001 - 15:11:53
Paul Begala, a Democratic consultant, said he witnessed an explosion near the Pentagon. "It was a huge fireball, a huge, orange fireball," Begala said in an interview on his cell phone. He said another witness told him a helicopter exploded. AP reporter Dave Winslow also saw the crash. He said, "I saw the tail of a large airliner..... It plowed right into the Pentagon." Another eyewitness has said that it was a low-flying commercial airliner which crashed into the Pentagon. An eyewitness to the World Trade Centre crash has said that they saw the first plane twenty blocks away from the Centre and that it seemed to veer towards the twin towers. Other major government institutions, including Treasury and the State Department, were also evacuated. Read more: http://www.breakingnews.ie/archives/2001/0911/world/cwmhmhauey/#ixzz1tA7GZhmuIt's unlikely a competing news organization would have referenced this information, at least until the AP had first been acknowledged as "breaking" the news.
However, this one-page AP timeline lists 9:43:07 a.m., instead of 10:11:53 a.m., Eastern Daylight Savings Time, as the time of the first announcement that "[a]n aircraft has crashed into the Pentagon"---or a 28 minute, 46 second discrepancy between the two records. This alert, and another one 52 seconds later announcing the evacuation of the West Wing of White House amid terrorist threats, are the only two out of the 64 breaking-news items found on the timeline which are denominated in seconds, while each of the 222 alerts and bulletins spread over the same time period in the Crosbie archive is denominated in seconds on the actual pages, which can be accessed off the list of linked titles.
Two more significant differences between what I consider to be a later remediated summary of AP breaking news, and the more voluminous AP material compiled earlier and maintained by Crosbie, are the timing of the announcement of the first plane strike on the north tower, which has been pushed back at least four minutes, from 8:48:59 a.m. to 8:53 a.m., and the nature and context of the of the second crash announcement, whose timing has been altered only slightly, from 9:08:48 a.m. to 9:09 a.m.
It isn't difficult to understand why corrections to the record became necessary, especially the alteration of the 8:48:59 a.m. first-strike announcement:
"There are unconfirmed reports that a jet plane has crashed into the World Trade Centre Tower in New York."into the claim of an 8:53 a.m. announcement:
"Plane crashes into the World Trade Center according to television reports."According to the Wikipedia Timeline for the day of the September 11 attacks:
8:48:08: The first television report of an incident at the World Trade Center is broadcast locally in New York by WNYW less than two minutes after the plane crashed into the North Tower. WNYW breaks into a Paramount Pictures movie trailer for Zoolander with the first live TV pictures of black smoke coming from the North Tower, relayed by a WNYW cameraman at ground level. As WNYW broadcasts the first live pictures of smoke, the voice of reporter Dick Oliver is heard from the scene: "Jim (referring to WNYW's Jim Ryan, who was not in the studio at the time), just a few moments ago, something believed to be a plane crashed into the South Tower of the World Trade Center. I just saw flames inside, you can see the smoke coming out of the tower; we have no idea what it was. It was a tremendous boom just a few moments ago."
8:49:34: The first network television and radio reports of an explosion or incident at the World Trade Center, when CNN breaks into a Ditech commercial, and Carol Lin, the first TV network anchor to break the news of the attacks, says: "we have unconfirmed reports this morning that a plane has crashed into one of the towers of the World Trade Center."The qualifier "unconfirmed" does little to mitigate the AP's announcement based on multiple "reports" [i.e. more than one] that a jet plane had struck the north tower, as opposed to a small aircraft, or a preliminary notice of an unspecified explosion or incident of some kind. Coming at 8:48:59 a.m., or less than three minutes after the opening salvo in the War on Terror, the AP announcement would have informed the similarly sounding 8:49:34 a.m. televised CNN announcement of "unconfirmed reports...that a plane has crashed into...the World Trade Center," rather than vice-versa, with CNN, or another television report, having informant of the AP, as the corrected record specifies.
Before the 9:09 a.m. announcement, "A plane crashes into the second tower of the World Trade Center," on the AP's timeline "A stunning 48 hours of news," which varied from the Crosbie record by only a few seconds, came two other intermediate announcements:
9:04 Explosion rocks second World Trade Center tower
9:05 An aircraft crashed into the upper floors of one of the World Trade Center towers Tuesday morning. Shortly afterward a second explosion rocked the other tower. It is universally believed by those who were watching on television, that they witnessed the impact of the second plane crash "live" at 9:03:02 a.m., while also seeing a near simultaneous explosion of jet fuel outside of the building. As the 9:08:48 bulletin in the Crosbie record puts it:
A second plane has crashed into the second tower at World Trade Centre just minutes after another passenger plane had already crashed into the tower.
An explosion occurred as the plane crashed into the tower.Presumably, the originators of the Associated Press breaking-news wire were also tuned into the live broadcasts on all the major networks, although, I believe, only NBC is credited in retrospect with a "live" transmission of the second plane crash. Why the AP would introduce incorrect bulletins into a remediated record is partly explained by the finesse put on the issue in the Wikipedia Timeline:
Because of the North Tower's obstruction of the South Tower from certain camera angles, some are originally unaware that a second plane has struck the South Tower, and instead mistakenly believe that the second explosion has occurred in the North Tower. As instant replays of the second plane crash are shown, the anchors on the three major broadcast networks speculate on whether they are witnessing a terrorist attack or some sort of very rare accident. CNN changes its headline to read "Second plane crashes into World Trade Center." In the case of the anchors on the local station WABC, they at first assume that the explosion seen was caused when the fuselage of the first plane exploded. As other sources and eyewitnesses correct them that it was actually a plane that had hit the South Tower, the WABC anchors then initially suggest it was a rare accident, saying that the two crashes might have been caused by navigational system failure. When the AP's announcement of the second plane crash, as contained in the Crosbie archive (which I consider to be the legitimate AP wire,) said it followed "another passenger plane [which] had already crashed into the tower," the wording equated in the public imagination that which was being seen (either "live," or in "instant replay") with that which was to remain unseen for many more hours, until the chance video taken of the first crash into the north tower by the Naudet documentarians "surfaced," and was shown on network television. This characterization equating both as "passenger planes"---or in other words, "big Boeing commercial jet liners"---is remedied by the simpler description: "Plane crashes."

A reasoning for why a remedial AP timeline would move forward the timing of the announcement of an aircraft crash into the Pentagon, from 10:11:53 a.m., to 9:43:07 a.m., or a striking 28 minute, 46 second discrepancy, was set forth in a November 04, 2008 StevenWarRan blog, Saint Christopher of Plante, and remains adequate.

9:12 Washington FBI investigating reports of plane hijacking before World Trade Center crashes
9:15 Washington The FBI is investigating reports that two plane crashes at the WTC are the result of foul play, The AP has learned.

There are reports that the FBI may be investigating the possibility that the two plane crashes may have happened on purpose.
9:27am - Fears plane crashes were acts of terrorism
FBI investigating reports of plane hijacking before World Trade Centre crashes.
The FBI told CNN that they have not yet established if it was a terrorist act.
A US Official has said that the crashes "appear to be acts of terrorism".
However, every other single announcement has been altered between the two AP lists in both the title and timing. So, logically, they both can't be called AP work, unless the Associated Press can operate in alternate, simultaneous universes---and I'd call that disassociated press.
So one way of looking at "A stunning 48 hours of news," is as a dumbed-down, dressed-up, and non-functioning links list, but these are only cosmetic characteristics. Both it and the broader Crosbie archive purport to record a major step in the public dissemination of factual details of unforeseen events, out of the hands of news gatherers to the broader consciousness of a still-select group of professionals with access to an AP wire in real time.
But here we are presented with two separate sets of facts. There is not one single agreement between them

For the most part, the Crosbie wires represent the pre-written Bible of advance directives for an event that was as scripted as humanly possible. News is said to emerge, but it really, it is launched. Much of the time there is no corporal reality behind what is being depicted at all People didn't actually board planes, then have to be logistically maneuvered around in the event of a snafu. In the same way, Paul Begala didn't have speak on a cell phone, and Dave Winslow was probably eating doughnuts all morning. Mistakes do happen, and I'm sure stupid mistakes earn instant death penalties. But the producers charged with manifesting successful outcomes must pride themselves on quick thinking on their feet---and never, never resort to overcorrections.
I don't understand cases like the following:
Wednesday, September 12, 2001 : |
Passengers voted to overpower hijackers 9:34:19 PM Passengers on United Airlines flight 93 had voted to overpower hijackers after realising that the plane was to crash into the White House. Jeremy Glick, a passenger on the plane which crashed in Pittsburgh, had been in contact with his wife by phone. He said that the men on the plane had taken the vote after they had heard about the World Trade Centre crashes. His two-month-old daughter, Emerson, was with him on the plane. Moments later the plane crashed in Somerset County, Pittsburgh. |
That would be 9:34 p.m. Greenwich Mean Time, or 2:34 a.m. on Sept. 13th in New York! Were they trying to punish or control mommy? Or was mommy up for anything? I can see how the control matrix is so powerful that United would come up with the boarding passes and Wally the DNA, but how can a mistake so aberrant be excused as journalistic stupidity now that I know about it?
I'll have to track down the site and give it credit for a marvelous study on the "Flight 93 landed in Cleveland" controversy. The writer even interviewed Liz Foreman, who explained it was an incorrect AP wire story (while apologizing for wrongfully attributing the work in-house to herself and the 9News Staff.) She caught the gaff within moments, we're told, and broke the link, but unforgivably, she left the page up in wonderland where the curious eventually got at it. So we know the Mayor is a trauma-trained drone serving a credibility function, a standard that raises this above the usually vapid narrative detailing, so my question is this: was the satanic dance really as fluid as all this? Were they throwing the dice at 35,000 feet for ritual sacrifice, with the losers-survivors getting plump family foundations and speaking roles on the church and campus circuit?

Suspected hijacker's photo unearthed
8:11:13 AM
A photograph of one of the suspected hijackers in the US terrorist attacks has been unearthed in Florida.
Amanullah Atta Mohammed, pictured in a State of Florida Division of Motor Vehicles driver's licence photograph, is being investigated by the FBI.
He is one of two men who allegedly attended a Florida flight training school a year ago.
The passport-size photo of the 33-year-old was seized by FBI agents who raided a one-bedroom ground-floor apartment he rented in Coral Springs, Florida.
It's thought the suspect and another man were trained at a nearby flying school.
The Miami Herald and local TV station WTJV-TV released the photo.
The FBI believe Atta took over the controls of one of the flights from Boston before steering it into the World Trade Centre.
A book-keeper at the school said: "The men claimed they were German cousins. They qualified in January and didn't mingle with other students."

“ | This just in. You are looking at obviously a very disturbing live shot there. That is the World Trade Center, and we have unconfirmed reports this morning that a plane has crashed into one of the towers of the World Trade Center. CNN Center right now is just beginning to work on this story, obviously calling our sources and trying to figure out exactly what happened, but clearly something relatively devastating happening this morning there on the south end of the island of Manhattan. That is once again, a picture of one of the towers of the World Trade Center. | ” |
Just a minute later, Sean Murtagh, CNN vice-president of finance, in an on-air phone call, says from his office in the CNN New York bureau that a large passenger commercial jet was seen to hit the World Trade Center. Murtagh is the first network employee on the air. The first email bulletins of breaking news from CNN and MSNBC report "fire at tower of World Trade Center". Both CNN and MSNBC's websites receive such heavy traffic that many servers collapse. BBC News' website is active and shows a picture of the North Tower on fire. Minutes later, email news bulletins revise the reports of fire to a plane crash.

9:43 a.m.-9:53 a.m. September 11, 2001: Associated Press First to Report a Plane Hit the Pentagon; CNN Still Unsure What Happened for Ten More Minutes
An Associated Press news alert at 9:43 a.m. states, “An aircraft has crashed into the Pentagon, witnesses say.” [ASSOCIATED PRESS, 2001 ; BROADCASTING AND CABLE, 8/26/2002] This is apparently the first news of the crash. Initial television reports stated there had been an explosion at the Pentagon, but not that a plane caused it (see 9:39 a.m.-9:44 a.m. September 11, 2001). Minutes later, there is still uncertainty over what caused the explosion. At 9:49, CNN’s Chris Plant reports from the Pentagon, “[I]nitial reports from witnesses indicate that there was in fact a helicopter circling the building, contrary to what the AP reported, according to the witnesses I’ve spoken to anyway, and that this helicopter disappeared behind the building, and that there was then an explosion” (see (9:35 a.m.-9:36 a.m.) September 11, 2001). [CNN, 9/11/2001] It is not until 9:53 that CNN confirms, "it was a plane that crashed into the Pentagon."[CNN, 9/11/2001]
